Safety Standards in Australia for Mattresses
Your baby’s mattress will be one of the more important purchases you make when creating your nursery space and getting ready for the baby and it is incredibly important that your baby cot mattress meets the Australian Safety Standard AS/NZS 8811.1:2013.
The Australian Safety Standards are guidelines that are agreed upon by industry experts, all of which are designed to keep consumers safe and protected when purchasing baby nursery products.
The standard AS/NZS 8811.1:2013 is the standard used in Australia that details and outlines the specific requirements for cot mattresses, including mattress firmness.
When purchasing your baby cot mattress it is very important to note that it is compliant and meets these standards, if it does not meet these guidelines, it may not be a safe sleep surface for your little one.
Firmness
This safety standard identifies the requirements for baby cot mattress firmness levels, material requirements and other key safety elements that are important in a safe sleep for your little one.
If it is not stated or identified that the mattress options you are looking at do not adhere to the safety standards, it is not safe and not recommended for use.
Sizing
When purchasing your cot and mattress, the size of the mattress is incredibly important in that it is the correct size with your cot.
It’s important that your mattress thickness does not exceed 15cm/150mm as well as a mattress that lies perfectly flat in the cot, especially when placed in the centre of the cot, there shouldn’t be any uneven surfaces.
When your mattress is placed in the centre of the cot, the gaps between the sides of the mattress and the cot rails should not exceed 20mm.
Materials
The materials used in your baby’s mattress are important for a variety of reasons, including safety, firmness and comfort.
Across our entire baby cot mattress range, we are focused on using quality materials at every layer to ensure the mattress is as safe as it possibly can be for your sleeping little one.
In this instance we are focused on using quality pocket spring technology, in ensuring that the springs can work at a high level, and materials like bamboo fibre which is a gentle material, does not irritate and is thermo-regulating.

Size of a Travel Cot Mattress?
Travel cots (also known as portacots) are a great sleep space option for your little one when out of their usual sleep space, especially when travelling. They are slightly smaller than what your little one would be sleeping in at home.
There is no usual standard size for the travel cot, however, they usually sit somewhere at 1000 x 700mm.
