FAQs

How do I choose a baby cot?

Safety comes first - any cot sold in Australia must comply with the Australian standards. This addresses things like gap spacing, build quality, heights and ensures a mattress will fit snugly.

Functionality is also important. In Australia cots can have up to two heights, which save your back when the baby is smaller and then it can be lowered down when they're older.

Cots can be used from birth, many parents begin with a bassinet because it’s smaller and easier to move around the house. Depending on your baby’s size and development, bassinets are generally suitable until around six months of age.

What is the difference between a crib and a cot?

A cot and a crib are the same, a small bed and/or sleeping space for your little one to sleep in their early years, normally from when they are born until about 3 to 4 years of age.

Cot is used in Australia and the UK and crib is normally used in the USA. Other than this, there are no other differences.

There may be differences in 'cribs' sold in the USA as they have different regulations

What's the difference between a cot and a cot bed?

This can be a bit confusing. Sometimes a cot bed can be used to refer to a full size cot and cot might refer to compact cots.

The two are different in sizes, a compact cot is smaller and often on wheels. It will fit through a standard door. If you're short on space or wanting a more mobile option, compact cots are a great choice. The flip side is the child might outgrow them sooner. Most compact cots can't turn into toddler beds.

A full size cot, is less mobile but can be converted into a toddler bed. This means your child will be able to use it for longer.

There is no right or wrong option, it comes down to what works best for your situation.

Do I need a bassinet and a cot?

All of our cots (full and compact sizes) come with the option of the newborn (bassinet) height.

The bigger consideration around if you need both a bassinet and a cot is how you plan on using them. Having your newborn close by is critical in the early months and sometimes a fixed cot doesn’t allow for this (space restrictions in your room etc). A bassinet solves this.

Bassinets often come on wheels and comfortably fit through standard doors allowing you to have a safe sleeping space for your little one wherever you may be in the house.

Are drop-side cots safe?

Dropside cots are not banned in Australia. Australia has a fantastic global reputation when it comes to safety in baby products. The Australian standard AS/NZS 2172: 2013, identify dropside cots as safe, if they meet the guidelines outlined in the standard.

Dropside cots are regulated safely in most countries, except for the United States, who have banned the use of dropside cots. The United States banned dropside cots due to the lack of quality in construction and the standard they had used was ineffective in testing the use of a dropside cot. The Australian standard, AS/NZS 2172: 2013, has ensured that dropside cots are a safe and secure option for families searching for a new baby cot.
