Key Take-aways
Among all of the pieces you need for your nursery, your baby’s mattress is an important purchase.
There are a lot of options on the market, but there are some helpful tips to consider when looking for a mattress.
Safety Standards
All mattresses sold in Australia, need to meet the following standard; Australian Cot Mattress Standards, AS/NZS 8811.1:2013.
If the mattress you are looking at does not reference that the mattress meets this standard, it isn’t a mattress to be considered.
At Tasman Eco, we’re proud to create some of Australia’s favourite baby mattresses.
We have a few different mattress types, at different price points and using different material variations.
It’s important to note that all Tasman Eco mattresses meet Australian standards.
Mattress Firmness
Choosing a firm mattress is a good place to start when searching for a mattress.
Initially, a firm mattress might not make sense and seem uncomfortable, but a firm baby mattress is an important safety measure for your sleeping baby.
Your baby’s mattress should be a firm sleep surface, as sleeping on a soft surface can increase the risk of sudden unexpected infant death, especially if the baby rolls over onto their stomach.
Firm baby mattresses are as they give a sleeping baby a stable and firm surface that prevents them from sinking into the bedding and mattress.
Additionally, a firm mattress provides a good and strong resistance when the baby eventually pushes or stands up in the cot.
It is important that any plastic packaging is removed before using the mattress with your baby.
Also, if using a mattress protector, it should be strong and a tight fit on the mattress.
Red Nose recommends never to use soft bedding under the bottom fitted sheet as these materials/fabrics can make the surface too soft for your baby.
Mattress Size
The size of the mattress is another important factor to consider when purchasing your baby mattress.
Most manufacturers, like Tasman Eco, will always suggest and recommend the correct mattress size when purchasing a cot.
There should be no more than a 20mm gap between the mattress and cot sides and ends, any gaps larger than 20mm puts your baby at risk of getting stuck in the space between the mattress and the cot.

We’ve broken down the different mattress types for you and popped some shopping links down so you’re easily able to check out the different mattress options available to you.
